my current style seems to be 'just get the f*cking shot', so most of my work has a rather 'rough' feel to it where I tend to be a 2-take wonder.
most of my style comes out in the editing. if I can hold a shot, or design a shot to reveal something instead of cut to it, that's what I'll aim for. but of course, cos all my films are filth cheap, ironically they're full of irritating cuts instead of dolly and crane shots ...
rythm - revelation - realisation, that sort of paradigm is ingrained in all my work, not that it always shows because there are always technical constraints or cack-handed crew members.
i never go out to emulate a style, but i guess i'm closest to film-noir except I can't even afford the lights ;-)

So what is the most important aspect of 'style'? Is it art direction, cinematography, editing, or does style just...happen? Are we as film maker just walking in the footsteps of those that have gone before us, or is there new place to take film.

Eddie, when I started making films two years ago I would have completely agreed with you. But, in my personal experience I've found that good art direction, cinematography, etc. ,etc does very well to support the story. And I've noticed my films that I have stressed all of those things have gotten better receptions. My point is a good story can't stand alone. You gotta keep their interest.
But seriously, what the hell do I know.

I think your style should never distract you from what you are trying to achieve or say. For me, my style is more of a byproduct of what I have tried to achieve in different films, cumulatively collecting with each new experience. If you get to the point as a filmmaker that you are betraying what you want to achieve to 'keep it stylish', I say screw it, and let the chips fall where they may. Break new ground.

i think a style evolves, and depends which (if any) DoP you work with.
take a look at ridley's famous hovis ad, no post modern biomechanics there!
style means different things to different people.
those who set style rarely follow it.

Hey there.
I think Miker has given the most honest reply on this topic. At our level of filmmaking with the budget or lack of that we have. Its it hard enough to get something made let alone spending a day to shoot your signiture shot.
Thats why I would say any style I may have comes from the writing and what I can do in post. Any style that comes from the actual shoot mostly comes subconsciously or just plane fluke.
P.S
Roybattyboy can you just fuck off.

Hey Despin are you getting alittle paranoid? That comment wasn't aimed at you. You and SoulJacker had your fun on Mods post. And I am here to stay, hopefully you will soon tire of your childish name calling.
But to take on you serious point; i think that at any level of film making can develop a style. I fact the smaller the budget the greater the inovation. Simple tasks involve the greatest ingenuity to make the seem bigger and better then they are.
